When should I paint pottery for Christmas, Valentine's, Mother's Day and Easter?

Painted pottery makes a gift nobody else can buy, but it needs time in the kiln. At Designs Café in Dartington, near Totnes, every piece you paint is glazed and fired for you, and it is ready to collect within two weeks. So the date that matters is not the occasion itself — it is two weeks before it.

What are the last paint dates for 2026–27?

  • Christmas 2026: paint by Saturday 12 December to collect before Christmas.

  • Valentine's Day (Sun 14 Feb 2027): paint by Sunday 31 January.

  • Mother's Day (Sun 7 Mar 2027): paint by Sunday 21 February.

  • Easter (Sun 28 Mar 2027): paint by Sunday 14 March.

Paint after these dates and your piece will still be fired and ready to collect — just after the day itself.

Why does painted pottery take two weeks?

After you paint, your piece is glazed and fired in our kiln. That is what turns the paint into a hard, glossy finish, and it cannot be rushed. The £5 studio fee on each piece covers the paints, brushes, glazing and firing, so there is nothing extra to pay when you collect.

How does a pottery painting visit work?

Choose a piece from the shelves — prices run from £7 to £50+ — and paint it your own way. A session takes about two hours. Beginners and children are welcome (children with an adult), and walk-ins are welcome whenever we have space. Groups of more than six, please email info@designscafe.uk first. While you paint you get 10% off café food and drink: speciality coffee from Voyager Coffee, cakes from Exploding Bakery, with gluten-free and vegan cakes and oat milk.

Are there Christmas painting sessions for children?

Yes. Christmas Bauble Painting & Hot Chocolate for Children runs on Wednesdays, 4:00–5:30pm, from 11 November to 9 December (£15, kiln fee and a hot chocolate included, for children aged 4+). Hand & Footprint Pottery with a free Christmas bauble runs on Tuesdays, 9:00–11:00am, from 3 November to 8 December. Both are on our Workshops page.

What if I've missed the date?

Buy a gift card instead. Designs Café gift cards come in amounts from £20 to £100 and can be spent on pottery painting, workshops and the gifts in our shop — a good present for someone who would rather paint their own.

Where are you and when are you open?
